Looking for an online trauma therapist, PTSD counselling in Newfoundland or New Brunswick, or a trauma therapist in Moncton or Gander?

Everest Therapeutics provides specialized trauma and PTSD therapy virtually across New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario, with in-person trauma counselling also available through our Moncton, NB and Gander, NL locations.

Trauma is one of the core areas of specialization across our counselling team.

Several Everest therapists have completed advanced training and certification in trauma treatment. Courtney, Mel, Jerica, and Kaitlin have additional training in trauma and PTSD treatment, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and several members of our team hold additional complex trauma certifications and specialized trauma credentials.

Our therapists also draw from Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic and nervous-system approaches, attachment-focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and other trauma-focused approaches according to each therapist's individual training and the needs of the client.

Our goal is not simply to call ourselves “trauma-informed.” We have intentionally built a team with additional education and specialized training in working with trauma, PTSD, complex trauma, attachment, and the nervous system.

Trauma Therapy That Goes Beyond the Symptoms

Trauma can shape how you feel, respond, connect with other people, and move through the world — sometimes long after the experience itself has ended.

For some people, trauma is connected to a specific event. For others, it developed gradually through repeated experiences, relationships, childhood environments, chronic stress, loss, or situations where safety and emotional needs were inconsistent.

Trauma may affect your nervous system, relationships, emotional regulation, boundaries, self-esteem, sense of safety, and ability to trust yourself or other people.

You do not need to have a PTSD diagnosis — or even be certain that what you experienced “counts” as trauma — to talk with a trauma therapist.

What Can Trauma Look Like?

Trauma can show up differently from one person to another.

You may experience:

  • Feeling constantly on edge or unable to relax

  • Anxiety or panic

  • Hypervigilance

  • Intrusive thoughts or memories

  • Nightmares or disrupted sleep

  • Emotional numbness

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself

  • Dissociation or shutdown

  • Difficulty trusting other people

  • Relationship difficulties

  • People-pleasing

  • Difficulty setting boundaries

  • Intense emotional reactions

  • Shame or self-criticism

  • Feeling unsafe even when you know you're safe

  • Avoiding reminders of difficult experiences

  • Chronic overwhelm or burnout

  • Difficulty understanding why certain situations trigger strong reactions

Sometimes people recognize these patterns long before they recognize their experiences as trauma.

PTSD Therapy

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following exposure to traumatic or overwhelming experiences.

People living with PTSD may experience intrusive memories, avoidance, changes in mood or beliefs, hypervigilance, difficulty feeling safe, sleep problems, emotional reactivity, or other changes in everyday functioning.

Everest Therapeutics has therapists with specialized training in evidence-based PTSD treatment, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Treatment is individualized. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine an approach that fits your experiences, goals, readiness, and needs.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD

Everest Therapeutics has multiple practitioners with additional training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based psychotherapy developed specifically for PTSD.

CPT focuses on understanding how traumatic experiences may influence beliefs about yourself, other people, safety, trust, control, intimacy, and the world around you.

Rather than simply managing symptoms, CPT can help people examine beliefs that developed following trauma and develop more balanced ways of understanding what happened and its impact.

Courtney, Mel, Jerica, and Kaitlin are among Everest practitioners with additional trauma and/or CPT training, with individual credentials and certifications outlined in their therapist profiles.

This gives clients the ability to choose among several trauma-focused therapists rather than relying on a single trauma provider.

Complex Trauma Therapy

Not all trauma comes from one identifiable event.

Complex trauma can develop through repeated, prolonged, or relational experiences that affect a person's sense of safety, identity, emotional regulation, relationships, and ability to trust.

This may include experiences related to:

  • Childhood trauma

  • Childhood emotional neglect

  • Difficult or unsafe family environments

  • Emotional abuse

  • Relationship trauma

  • Interpersonal violence

  • Chronic instability

  • Bullying

  • Repeated loss

  • Long-term caregiving or stress

  • Experiences of rejection or abandonment

  • Other prolonged or repeated overwhelming experiences

Several Everest therapists have completed additional complex trauma training and certification.

Complex trauma therapy may focus not only on what happened in the past but also on understanding the patterns that developed in order to survive and how those patterns may be affecting your life today.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) & Trauma Therapy

Several Everest therapists incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS) and parts-informed approaches into trauma therapy.

IFS can help clients approach protective patterns with curiosity rather than judgement.

Responses such as shutting down, avoiding, people-pleasing, becoming highly independent, staying constantly busy, or struggling to trust may have developed for understandable reasons.

Parts-informed trauma therapy can help you understand these responses, develop greater self-compassion, and build a different relationship with the parts of yourself that learned to protect you.

Somatic & Nervous-System Approaches to Trauma

Trauma isn't experienced only through thoughts.

Many people notice trauma through physical tension, difficulty relaxing, feeling constantly activated, numbness, shutdown, or a sense that their body reacts before their mind understands why.

Some Everest therapists incorporate somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches to help clients better notice and understand these responses.

Depending on your needs and therapist's training, sessions may include grounding, body awareness, emotional regulation, and strategies for increasing a sense of safety and stability.

Childhood & Developmental Trauma

Experiences during childhood can influence relationships, self-worth, boundaries, emotional regulation, and how safe it feels to depend on other people later in life.

You don't need to remember every detail of childhood or identify one specific traumatic event for therapy to be useful.

Trauma therapy can help explore how earlier experiences may be connected to patterns in your present life while developing greater understanding, choice, and self-compassion.

Relationship & Attachment Trauma

Relationships can sometimes be a source of trauma.

Experiences involving emotional abuse, betrayal, instability, coercive relationships, abandonment, or repeated emotional harm can affect trust and connection long after a relationship has ended.

Trauma therapy can help you understand how these experiences may be affecting current relationships, boundaries, emotional responses, and your sense of safety with other people.

Our therapists may incorporate attachment-focused approaches, IFS, somatic therapy, CPT, and other trauma-focused models depending on the client's needs.

Medical Trauma, Grief & Other Difficult Experiences

Trauma can also develop following medical experiences, accidents, sudden losses, workplace events, caregiving experiences, major life disruptions, or other situations that felt overwhelming or unsafe.

You do not need to decide whether your experience meets a particular definition of trauma before seeking therapy.

If something continues to affect your life, it is worth talking about.

What Happens in Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy does not mean immediately telling your therapist every detail of the most painful experiences of your life.

Good trauma therapy is collaborative and paced.

Early therapy may focus on understanding what you're experiencing, establishing safety and trust, identifying patterns, and developing strategies for emotional regulation and day-to-day functioning.

Depending on your needs and the therapeutic approach you choose, trauma therapy may involve:

  • Understanding trauma and nervous-system responses

  • Developing grounding and regulation strategies

  • Identifying triggers and protective patterns

  • Exploring thoughts, emotions, and body responses

  • Addressing trauma-related beliefs

  • Understanding attachment and relationship patterns

  • Strengthening boundaries

  • Building self-trust

  • Processing traumatic experiences when appropriate

  • Developing greater self-compassion

  • Reconnecting with relationships and everyday life

You and your therapist can discuss what approach feels appropriate for you.
