The Dive Reflex: How Cold Water May Help Calm Your Nervous System

Have you ever splashed cold water on your face when you were overwhelmed and noticed that, somehow, you felt a little more grounded afterward?
There is a physiological reason this can happen.
Exposure to cold water on the face can activate something called the diving reflex, a natural response that influences heart rate and the autonomic nervous system. Because of its effects on the body, cold-water techniques are sometimes used as short-term strategies for managing intense emotions, anxiety, or physiological arousal.
You may also have heard these techniques described online as ways to “activate the vagus nerve.” There is some truth behind that idea, but the relationship between cold water, the vagus nerve, and nervous system regulation is a little more complicated than social media sometimes makes it sound.
Let’s break down what is actually happening.

What Is the Dive Reflex?
The dive reflex, also called the mammalian diving reflex, is an automatic physiological response designed to help the body conserve oxygen when the face encounters cold water.
Humans have this reflex, although it is particularly pronounced in mammals that spend significant amounts of time underwater.
When cold receptors around the face are stimulated, especially around the forehead, eyes, nose, and cheeks, the body begins making automatic adjustments.
One of these changes can be a slowing of the heart rate. Blood flow may also be redirected toward organs that are particularly important for survival.
You don't have to consciously tell your body to do this. Your nervous system handles the response automatically.
That is part of what makes the dive reflex interesting from a mental health perspective.
The Dive Reflex, Cold Water and the Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve is one of the major nerves involved in the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps regulate functions such as heart rate, digestion, and aspects of the body's recovery from stress.
During the dive reflex, signals involving the trigeminal nerve and autonomic nervous system contribute to changes in cardiovascular activity. Parasympathetic activity, including activity involving the vagus nerve, plays a role in slowing the heart rate.
This is why you will sometimes see cold-water techniques described as “vagus nerve stimulation.”
However, it is more accurate to think of the dive reflex as a coordinated physiological response involving multiple parts of the nervous system rather than simply a trick that switches the vagus nerve on.
Our nervous systems are much more complex than an on/off switch.
Can Cold Water Help With Anxiety?
When we experience anxiety, panic, overwhelm, or intense emotions, our bodies can become highly activated.
You might notice:
a racing heart
rapid or shallow breathing
muscle tension
feeling hot or flushed
difficulty concentrating
racing thoughts
a feeling that you need to escape the situation
Trying to “think your way out” of this state isn't always easy.
Sometimes working with the body first can help.
Cold stimulation to the face may create a strong physical sensation that redirects attention while also triggering physiological changes associated with the dive reflex.
This doesn't mean cold water treats the underlying cause of anxiety. Instead, it may be one tool for helping some people manage a moment of intense emotional or physiological activation.
Cold Water and Nervous System Regulation
The internet is full of advice about regulating your nervous system, including ice baths, cold showers, breathing exercises, vagus nerve exercises, and other “nervous system hacks.”
Some of these strategies are based on real physiological processes, but nervous system regulation isn't about forcing yourself to remain calm all the time.
A healthy nervous system moves between different states depending on what is happening around us.
We need activation when we're exercising, responding to danger, concentrating intensely, or dealing with something stressful. We also need the ability to recover when that activation is no longer necessary.
For someone experiencing intense anxiety or emotional overwhelm, a sensory strategy such as cold water may sometimes help interrupt escalating physiological arousal.
The goal isn't to eliminate emotions.
It's to help bring the intensity down enough that you have more capacity to decide what you need next.
How to Use the Dive Reflex as a Grounding Technique
One simple way people experiment with cold stimulation is by applying cool or cold water to the face.
You might:
Splash cool water over your face.
Place a cool, damp cloth across your cheeks and around your eyes.
Hold a wrapped cold pack against parts of your face for a brief period.
Some therapeutic approaches also teach more structured versions of temperature-based distress-tolerance strategies.
The sensation should be cold but manageable. More extreme isn't necessarily better.
You do not need to take an ice bath or force yourself through an intensely uncomfortable experience to practice nervous system regulation.
The Dive Reflex and DBT's TIPP Skills
You may recognize this concept if you've encountered Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
DBT includes a group of distress-tolerance strategies commonly remembered using the acronym TIPP:
Temperature
Changing body temperature, including using cold stimulation, may help shift intense physiological arousal.
Intense Exercise
Brief physical activity can provide another outlet for heightened activation.
Paced Breathing
Slowing the breath, particularly allowing for a longer exhale, can help influence physiological arousal.
Paired Muscle Relaxation
Intentionally tensing and releasing muscles can help you notice and reduce physical tension.
These techniques are intended primarily for moments when emotions are extremely intense and it is difficult to access other coping strategies.
They aren't meant to replace understanding why the emotion is occurring.
Does Stimulating the Vagus Nerve “Reset” Your Nervous System?
You'll often see claims online that certain exercises can reset the vagus nerve or instantly move your body out of fight-or-flight mode.
That's an oversimplification.
The autonomic nervous system is constantly responding to information from your body, brain, relationships, and environment. There isn't a single reset button.
Cold water may influence physiological processes associated with the autonomic nervous system, but emotional regulation usually involves much more than one technique.
For many people, longer-term work might include understanding triggers, developing emotional awareness, improving sleep, setting boundaries, processing trauma, changing patterns of thinking, strengthening relationships, or learning strategies that work with their individual nervous system.
Think of cold water as one possible tool in a much larger toolbox.
When Cold Water Isn't the Right Grounding Technique
Cold-water techniques aren't appropriate for everyone.
People with certain cardiovascular, circulatory, neurological, or other medical conditions should speak with a qualified healthcare professional before intentionally using significant cold exposure or techniques intended to alter heart rate.
You also don't have to use cold if you simply hate it.
Grounding and emotional regulation strategies work differently for different people. For some people, warmth, movement, sensory input, breathing, music, pressure, or simply stepping away from an overstimulating environment may work better.
The goal is not to find the “perfect” nervous system technique.
It's to learn what helps your nervous system respond to difficult moments.
Learning to Work With Your Nervous System
Understanding the connection between the body, anxiety, emotions, and the nervous system can be an important part of therapy.
Sometimes emotional distress shows up first in our thoughts. Other times, we notice it in our bodies: a racing heart, tight chest, tense muscles, restlessness, nausea, or the feeling that we simply cannot settle.
Learning to recognize these signals can give us more opportunities to respond before emotions become overwhelming.
